Police Ride Along Video and My 3 Takeaways

I recently went on patrol for an official Police ride along with Officer Homza and K9 Dasti of the Wilkes-Barre City Police K9 Unit as a follow up to his episode of the podcast (Ep.78), and here are my 3 takeaways.

#1 Appreciation & Perspective.

First let me start by saying, I gained a greater appreciation for law enforcement from this police ride along.

Not that I didn’t appreciate law enforcement prior to this, but after “walking a mile” in someone else’s shoes as they say, it gave me a new perspective and a greater appreciation for the job these men and women do each day.

When I left my house that morning, there were several thoughts going through my head…

What’s going to happen today? What if we get in a car chase? What if we get caught in a shootout? Am I going to return home today?

But the one that stuck in my head is, “Am I going to return home today?”

Stop and think for a minute. When you go to work everyday, do you ever think, “I might not come home today?”

Probably not.

I know I don’t. But that day, I thought about it.

These men and women, who put their lives on the line everyday knowing they might not return home, gave me a whole new appreciation and perspective.

#2 Leadership.

Officer Homza is a leader in many ways.

He truly cares about the community and goes out of his way to build relationships.

While on patrol in Wilkes-Barre, we met a few young kids that approached officer Homza’s car while we were turning around in a parking lot of a housing development.

We drove back to the Wilkes-Barre police station quick to get some sticker/badges and of course, lollipops.

He handed them out to the kids and they were so excited to talk with us.

Two of them even said they want to be just like Officer Homza when they grow up.

There were high-fives all around.

Officer Homza is a leader.

#3 Police Officers are Human, too.

I witnessed officer Homza treating people with kindness, empathy, respect – a few qualities that are rarely shown in the mainstream media with police officers.

Most times police officers are portrayed as intimidating individuals, and they can be.

It is their job to be assertive, and give clear and direct instructions.

While on a domestic dispute call, officer Homza actually took the time to understand and empathize with this individual, aka the “suspect.”

While on patrol and in a tense situation like this, that could have gone south very quickly, officer Homza was calm and respectful.

There was a mutual respect.

The situation was resolved without any conflict or arrests made.

We all even shared a few laughs at the end of it.

Police Officers are Human, too.

Now if you made it this far, thanks for reading. Below is a link to the full ride along video:

Thank you Officer Homza and the Wilkes-Barre City Police K9 Unit for giving me this opportunity to join you on patrol!

The Show Goes On: Young Professionals Award Winners Announced

The Show Goes On: Young Professionals Award Winners Announced 800 800 OnTheStacks

The Greater Wilkes-Barre Chamber of Commerce hosted their Annual Young Professionals Awards last night at the Garden Drive in Hunlock Creek.

Due to the ongoing safety measures, things looked a little different this year, but that didn’t stop the Chamber from putting together a fun, safe, and socially distanced event to celebrate some of the best and brightest in our community.

First, I want to congratulate the entire lineup of all-star nominees. I also want to recognize two of the winners, my friends Chris Bohinski and Mike McGinley.

I caught up with both of them today to congratulate them on their awards.

Chris, whom I recently met during his appearance on Episode 29 of the podcast, became an immediate friend.

Last night, he was the recipient of the Inspiration Award, and is totally deserving of it.

If you listen to his episode on the podcast, you’ll hear the story of the ups and downs of his life and how even throughout the most trying times, he finds a way to keep smiling and sending positive vibes out into the universe.

“Life is full of surprises and I was humbled to learn, which was a total surprise to me, that I was chosen as the 2020 Inspiration Award recipient,” Bohinski said. “I will continue to embrace life’s serendipity and smile all along the way.”

Chris is the Co-Host of PA Live on WBRE and is the Creator of SmileStory.org.

Mike on the other hand, I’ve known for over 15 years.

He and I met as teenagers working at Wegmans in Wilkes-Barre. We’ve remained friends over the years, and now serve on the Wilkes-Barre POWER! Board together, with Mike as our Vice President.

Mike took home the Influencer of the Year award. He is the Major Accounts Executive and Digital Manager at the Times Leader and also has a column in the Sunday paper titled, “Around Town.”

When I spoke with him today, he talked about his work with the paper and how he uses his platform in a positive way for the region.

“NEPA is filled with phenomenal leaders and amenities. I consider myself lucky to live here, and I’m thrilled to help promote the area weekly through my newspaper column, as well as to work with many non-profits that enrich the region,” Mike said. “My life has been enhanced by the organizations and groups I’ve gotten involved with here.”

Both Chris and Mike have many things in common, but the most important commonality of all is their commitment in helping move NEPA forward.

Complete list of award winners:

  • Educator of the Year Jonathan Kadjeski, Equus Workforce Solutions at the PA CareerLink Luzerne County at Wilkes-Barre
  • Entrepreneur of the Year Ashlee Martinelli, Every Little Thing LLC and The Grand Bank
